Most people begin by comparing prices, and that is usually where it goes wrong. Two offers can both say "5 nights in Thailand" and still be different holidays: one includes the island trip and the shows, the other leaves you to pay for them after you land.

This guide is about the decision, not a sales pitch. It uses real details from our Malaysia, Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, Dubai and Japan itineraries, so you can see exactly what to look for when you choose an international tour package from Trivandrum.

By the Geeth International Tours & Travels team, Trivandrum

The short answer

  1. Set a total budget per person. Flights, visa, insurance, meals and spending money, not just the package price.
  2. Match the destination to your days and to who is travelling.
  3. Read the day-by-day plan for transfer hours, free time and real inclusions.
  4. Confirm the flights: airport, direct or connecting, timings, baggage.
  5. Check entry rules and get every term in writing before you pay.

1Start with the full cost

Write down every cost for every traveller before you compare anything:

  • Return flights from Trivandrum, or from Kochi or Kozhikode if fare and timing work better
  • Hotels, plus the meals your package leaves out (often only breakfast is covered)
  • Transfers, sightseeing tickets and optional activities
  • Visa or arrival-card fees, and travel insurance
  • Shopping, tips and a cushion for the unexpected

What keeps it lower

Off-peak weeks, midweek departures, flexible flight dates, a well-placed 3-star or 4-star, and a focused 4 to 6 nights in one region.

What pushes it higher

Christmas and New Year, April and May school holidays, direct flights on peak dates, beachfront resorts, private transfers and several cities in one trip.

Starting prices on our international packages page are a floor. Several itineraries, including Japan, Vietnam and Dubai, are priced per traveller once we know your dates, because flight timings, season and hotel category change the real cost.

Ask for two numbers: the price per person on twin sharing, and the total for your whole group. They are easy to confuse and the gap is large.

2Pick a destination that fits your days

With five or six days, favour places that don't spend two of them in transit. Here is how six of our most-asked-about trips differ in practice. Tap through for the full day-by-day plan.

Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur at night3 nights / 4 days

Malaysia: a compact first trip abroad

FamiliesFirst-timersVisa-free

We keep you in Kuala Lumpur, with one full day at Genting Highlands, Zoo Negara's panda centre, KL Tower and a Putrajaya lake cruise on the last morning. Good for parents who don't want to repack.

Watch for: a weekend surcharge on KLCC Aquarium entry.

Speed boat to Coral Island near Pattaya, Thailand4 nights / 5 days

Thailand: Pattaya beaches, Bangkok temples

FamiliesFriendsBeaches

Bangkok plus Pattaya is the easiest first pairing. Coral Island, Nong Nooch Garden, the Alcazar show, the Marble Temple and Safari World all fit in five days.

Watch for: Safari World is closed on Mondays, so the day order can change. Tiger interaction and island water sports are paid on the spot.

Cliffs and beach on Nusa Penida island, Bali4 nights / 5 days

Bali: culture, cliffs and a long island day

CouplesFamiliesAdventure

Ubud rafting and temples, Uluwatu and a Nusa Penida day trip are the core of our plan.

Watch for: the island day starts with a 6:30 AM pickup, ends on a 4:30 PM ferry and involves uneven cliff paths, so it is hard on weak knees. Temples need shoulders and knees covered.

Halong Bay cruise in northern Vietnam4 nights / 5 days

Vietnam: Hanoi, an overnight bay cruise, Da Nang

CouplesCultureFood

A well-paced north-to-central route, with Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge on day four.

Watch for: this plan runs on flight times. You must land in Hanoi before 9 AM for the city tour, and the same-day Hanoi to Da Nang flight must leave after 7 PM. Miss either and a day disappears.

Dubai city tour highlights4 nights / 5 days

Dubai: a short break with an Abu Dhabi day

FamiliesWinterShopping

Marina dinner cruise, desert safari with BBQ, Burj Khalifa and a full day in Abu Dhabi.

Watch for: Burj Khalifa tickets are not held on reservation. Miracle Garden is open only October to April. Airport transfers between 11 PM and 6 AM carry a surcharge.

Japan tour highlights from Osaka to Tokyo6 nights / 7 days

Japan: a bigger trip that needs lead time

OsakaKyotoTokyoMt. Fuji

Our plan includes the Shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo and six entry tickets.

Watch for: bullet-train times are confirmed only at booking, TeamLab Planets needs a timed slot, Fuji access depends on weather, and Japan runs largely on cash.

3Read the itinerary like a sceptic

The number of nights tells you very little. How they are spent tells you everything. Five nights split across Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket sounds generous until you notice the Phuket leg eats most of a day in airports. Ask for the day-by-day plan and check:

  • Which sights are included and which are optional extras
  • Hours spent in transfers each day, and how much free time you get
  • Whether the price covers entry tickets or only the vehicle
  • Whether hotels are confirmed or "or similar"
  • Which meals are covered. In most of our trips lunches and dinners are mostly your own, and each day says so
  • Whether the pace suits the youngest and the oldest traveller
A slightly shorter, calmer plan is often the better holiday.

4Sort out flights before you fall for the hotel

Flights are what first-time travellers underestimate, and where similar offers differ most. Trivandrum has had direct services to Gulf cities and Kuala Lumpur, while most other Southeast Asian trips connect somewhere. Schedules change by season, so confirm your dates instead of trusting an old route map.

✈️

Is airfare included?

Several of our itineraries exclude international flights. The quote must say so plainly.

🕑

Arrival and departure times

A 4 AM landing means hours waiting for check-in. A late departure after a full sightseeing day is exhausting.

🔄

Layovers

A very short connection on separate tickets is a risk. A very long one costs a day.

🧳

Baggage and other airports

Low-cost carriers often charge for bags. Kochi or Kozhikode can beat Trivandrum on fare, but add the cost of getting there.

5Check entry rules before you pay anything

Checked 15 October 2026

Rules moved a lot this year, and Thailand's changed more than once. Treat this as a snapshot and confirm on the official source before you book.

Malaysia Visa-free

Up to 30 days for tourism, currently valid through 31 December 2026. Complete the free MDAC arrival card online before you fly. For trips after that date, check whether the exemption has been extended.

Thailand Visa-free

Up to 30 days from 15 September 2026 (it was 60). The Indian Embassy advisory also lists the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival, a confirmed return ticket, hotel bookings and at least THB 20,000 cash per person. Read the advisory.

Vietnam e-visa

Required. The government e-visa is USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry. Apply only on evisa.gov.vn.

Dubai Visa

Generally required and applied for online before travel. Processing can take a few working days, so don't leave it to the last week.

Bali VoA / e-VoA

30-day visa on arrival or e-VoA (IDR 500,000), plus a separate Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person and the arrival declaration. Check evisa.imigrasi.go.id and lovebali.baliprov.go.id.

Japan Visa

Required, and it takes longer. Passport, bookings and dates must line up first, so begin early.

  • Keep your passport valid for at least six months from arrival, with blank pages.
  • Visa and levy fees are usually non-refundable, even if an application is rejected.
  • Carry printed or offline copies of approvals, hotel bookings and return tickets.
  • Only the destination's authorities decide visas. An agency can guide your documents but cannot guarantee approval. See our visa assistance in Kerala.

When to go, and how early to book

Kerala school holidays (December to January, April to May) are the peak for everyone leaving from here, so flights and hotels tighten first. Start two to three months ahead for those dates, and earlier for Japan or Schengen visas. Check your passport's validity now, not the week before you fly.

Thailand

Dark: best and busiest (Nov to Jan). Light: good (Feb, Mar, Oct). Pink: hot in April, rainy May to September, lowest prices.

Dubai

Dark: best (Nov to Feb). Light: good or mild (Mar to May, Oct). Pink: very hot (Jun to Sep), but cheaper.

Bali has its own festival and school-holiday surcharges, especially December to January, so book early for those weeks.

Group tour or customised trip?

Group tour

Fixed dates, fixed route, new people. Best when the dates and plan already match yours.

Customised trip

Built around your calendar, hotel and pace. Best for families with young children or older parents, honeymooners and private groups.

Neither is automatically cheaper. Ask for the total cost of both before you decide.

Red flags, and questions to ask before a deposit

Walk away or ask again if

  • The price is far below every other quote, with no breakdown
  • Hotels are "to be confirmed"
  • You are pushed to pay in full immediately
  • There are no written cancellation or date-change terms
  • Compulsory payments at the destination weren't mentioned
  • No named contact if a flight changes

Take these questions with you

  • Price per person on twin sharing, and the group total?
  • Which hotels are confirmed, and where?
  • Are flights, taxes and baggage included?
  • Which meals, transfers and tickets are covered?
  • Who applies for the visa, and at what cost?
  • Payment schedule and cancellation charges, in writing?
  • Who do I call if a transfer doesn't show up?

Choosing a travel agency in Trivandrum

Almost every agency advertises international trips. What separates them is how they act before you pay: they ask your dates, who is travelling (ages and mobility included) and your budget first; the quote is itemised and written; they explain trade-offs; and the reviews are detailed and recent.

We are Geeth International Tours & Travels, a Trivandrum travel agency operating since 2012, at R.K Complex, Ulloor–Akkulam Road, Medical College P.O. Every enquiry starts with the same four questions: when, who, roughly what budget, and what the trip should feel like. More on our page about an international travel agency in Trivandrum.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I book an international trip from Trivandrum?
For Christmas, New Year and the April to May holidays, start two to three months ahead. For Japan or Schengen destinations, start earlier because visa processing takes longer.
Are flights included in international tour packages?
Not always. Several of our itineraries cover hotels, transfers and sightseeing and exclude international flights. A written quotation should say plainly whether airfare is included.
Which countries can Indian travellers visit without a visa in 2026?
As of October 2026, Malaysia (until 31 December 2026) and Thailand (from 15 September 2026) allow visa-free tourist stays of up to 30 days. Rules change, so confirm with official sources before booking.
Is a group tour or a customised trip better?
A group tour suits you if the fixed dates and route already match your plans. A customised trip suits families with children or older relatives, or anyone who needs a specific hotel or a slower pace.
Why do some itineraries have no fixed price?
Where flight timings, season or hotel category change the cost a lot, as with Japan, Vietnam and Dubai, a fair price depends on your exact dates, so it is confirmed per traveller in writing.
